Giant Reptiles of the Outback

Burrunjor

In Australia, an Aboriginal tale tells of a terrifying creature called the Burrunjor. This creature walks on two legs and has two small forearms. This creature is said to be very dangerous and is about 25 feet long.

In the 1950’s, cattle ranchers in Northern Australia, reported to have found many of their cattle killed or half-eaten by a mysterious animal. The ranchers found giant bipedal tracks, some heard thunderous roars, and others heard it  crashing through the jungle at night. A farmer recently saw a Burrunjor from a distance of about 60-70 meters (around 250 feet). The last reported sighting was in 1982. Some farmers have left the area (doesn’t sound like the best place to live!).

A tracker in 1961, gave an account that he saw a huge reptile walking on two legs through a swamp near the Gulf Coast. He said it was about 25 feet tall. In addition, New Guinea, Boliva, and South America have sightings of similar creatures.

In  1984,   huge   three-toed   footprints   from   a gigantic bipedal reptile was found near Narooma, New South Wales.

Rex Gilroy confirmed the find and made a plaster cast of one of the tracks. The track was approximately 2 feet wide and 2 1/2 feet long.

                       Megalania Prisca

One day an exhausted surveyor, who wanted nothing more than to go home and rest, was getting into his truck when he saw what he first  thought to be a log in front of his vehicle. As he slammed the door of his truck, the log suddenly ran off into the forest!

What he may have actually seen was a giant, unknown reptile called Megalania Prisca (the giant lizard that supposedly died out thousands of years ago). This was not the only sighting of this creature.

Another person who saw a similar creature was a farmer who claimed to have seen it in his field. As it walked across he saw the length to be at least 25 feet. Rex Gilroy (an Australian  cryptozoologist) investigated the tracks and said they looked surprisingly like that from a giant lizard.

In 1979, herpetologist (a reptile scientist) Frank Gordon reported to have witnessed a lizard the size of a log in the Wattagan Mountains of New South Wales. He stated the length of the lizard was close to 30 feet.

And last of the reported sightings that I know about in New Guinea, a French priest reported to have seen a huge lizard lying on a log near the edge of a river. He stated the length of the lizard was the same as that of the log it was on. The next morning he came back and measured the log to be 30 feet long. This event took place in the 1960’s. I do not know if this was Megalania Prisca or another animal such as a T-Rex-like creature.
